I still have not received any entries.  Sure, it's not due for over a week, but given the limited number of replies to this, I have no idea what to expect in regards to total number of entries (apart from a few people who have told me they were participating). So, here's the scoop - I've wanted to host some sort of artistic "challenge" for people to participate in for a while.  I think I actually should get around to doing so, so here goes:

OMG, what is this?
It's a fractal, baby!

What is a fractal?
It's a really difficult question to answer, but I'll try to keep it as simple as I can. So, fellow fractalists, if you're reading, I won't be that precise in answering.

Wikipedia says: "A fractal is a mathematical set that has a fractal dimension that usually exceeds its topological dimension and may fall between the integers."
Wait, what?

I didn't even understand myself.

Ok, a fractal is basically the repetition of a same "image". This image can be repeated with its original dimension or fractal dimension (it can be resized).
For example, let's pick the Romanesco Broccoli (the image is from Wikipedia):

2011 BMFAC News UpdateBMFAC winners published in print magazine!
The 25 winners of the Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest were contacted in mid February to supply large format files of their winning images and also a short bio explaining their interest in fractal art, software used and general information about their work if they chose to do so. We were also informed that the first exhibit would be held in Logroño, in Northern Spain. Javier Barrallo, a Professor of Mathematics at The University of the Basque Country, Spain and also one of the panelists for the BMFAC was our contact for this. The current exhibit will be in the Casa de la Ciencia (House of Science), in Logroño, the Capital city of RIOJA until June 10th. I'll post a few pictures Javier sent further down. Javier also says he will send more pictures soon.

Fantastic Fractalicious Fractals issue 14The first issue of this year! This time I want to present some of the coolest fractals from 2011, it was really difficult to pick out some faves of the year, you are too good!!! But first, a short resume of last year's happenings.
What happened last year?
Pretty lot! Summer challenge: ON!Hello everybody!
After a really quick "OMFGIGOTANIDEA!" - "OMGIT'SAWESOME" type of conversation we decided to staaart...

It will work fairly easy: I'll give you guidelines, which you must keep in mind - but remember: these are challenges, you are not limited, you are just given some hints!

You will have 3 categories to enter:

COLOR challenge!
I'll show you a picture, or give you color codes, or describe you a landscape, and you'll have to "reproduce" it in a fractal way - with a visibly similar gradient.

weekly weirdness and...Yes indeed kiddies, its time for yet another installment of weekly weirdness from me!
This week, I have a few things I would like to mention, but first, I would like to say something serious.
I want to offer my sincere sympathies to all the families of the victims of the recent horrific acts in Colorado this past week. I know we all feel shocked and saddened by these events and we all wonder how this type of thing can keep happening.
I know that usually I seem to be a person with strong opinions on nearly every subject, but on this one I am at a loss to say what we can do to try to put a stop to such things. The arguments over gun control are something I am sure we have all heard before, from both sides, as well as more arguments about why whatever one side says, the other claims the first to be wrong... I don't claim to have the answers... I do believe that it seems rather stupid that we do not pass laws restricting access to high powered assault weapons to criminals, the mentally ill

Fractal Group Unlimited Art Competition/ June 2012Announcing the Fractal Group Unlimited First Art Competition!
Come One,.. Come All! You are hereby cordially invited to participate in the first Fractal Group Unlimited Art Competition! This first Competition will be open to the public, here at Deviant Art. Participants are requested to submit art images about, or relating to, the theme of "Friendship". Entries may be in any media, be it painting, photography, fractal, collaboration in drawing, etc. Abstract is welcome. Entries are limited to 'ONE' per participant.
Submission for consideration will begin Saturday, June 9th, 2012 and will be open until Saturday, June 30th, 2012.
Entries will be judged during the first week of July, 2012, and the winners announced on July 7th, 2012. The winning entries will be placed into a gallery for Competition Winners, for all to see.
The Prize for First Place will be 100 points.
The Prize for Second Place will be 50 points.
The Prize for Third Place will be 25 points.

Contest: 2ND ANNUAL-ish Deviation Title Contest!!!

UPDATE: The contest is now closed until August 1st when the winners will be announced. Good luck to all who played!!

Every deviation (in my humble opinion) deserves a great title - that is the idea behind this contest....

Participation is simple - note me a deviation title (not one that you have used before) - something you just made up - something clever, funny, thought provoking, dark, existential, inspirational....whatever....include as many as you wish in a note to me...and note me as many times as you wish, if you think of more later!!

IMPORTANT: please be notified that if one of your titles is picked as one of the winners, you are giving me permission to use it as the title for one of my fractal manipulation submissions (you will get credit as a collaborator on the submission, and you can post the piece as well!! - no worries there!!)

When the contest submission date rolls around, a few well-chosen friends and I will take a couple of weeks to pick the top 3 submissions.

Two of the winners will get "Honorable Mention" status, and as mentioned above, will have their title used for one of my fractal manipulation submissions.

The winner will win a "1 YEAR SUBSCRIPTION", and will also have their title used as one of my submissions!!

Contest starts: Today!! May 9th, 2012
Contest ends: July 19th, 2012
Winners will be announced: August 1st, 2012
